SORROW WIND

Winds wander, seek us out and scatter us
Forsaken breezes summon travellers
Falling in summer’s rapture
Falling in summer’s rapture
Summer has snatched us from cold’s silvery hand
Veiled morning glimmers mingling here with us
Youthful and tender, floating fearless
Flowers of calm uproot us
Flowers of calm uproot us
Flowering shoots us out to northern land
Lightsome we sail in summer’s nebula
Languid, this wind of spores’s a smuggler
Follow where roaming leads us
Follow where gloaming leads us
Finally flung to where we silently fell
Sorrow Wind - Text by Matthew Ker
SORROW WIND
Sorrow Wind is my debut EP, featuring six original tracks recorded at Saint Germain Studios in Paris. Built around string quartet and piano, the project blends folk and neo-classical influences while exploring the textures and expressive possibilities of bowed strings.
The EP is built around the title track Sorrow Wind which represents both my geographical and musical origins. The melody of the verses originally comes from a Swedish folk song, which was later arranged in the 1960s by my favorite jazz pianist, Bill Evans, together with Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund. For this new version, I developed a personal arrangement and composed additional original sections around the theme.
I see my arrangement and composition as a contribution to the development of this piece, as I borrowed some of Evans’ arrangement ideas for the theme while adapting the instrumentation, and added my own modern touch by composing the other sections. My aim was to create a contrast between the more traditional harmonies that inspired me, and a more personal and modern, minimalist writing style for the other sections.
The lyrics were written by the British artist and songwriter Matthew Ker, which fitted perfectly my vision for the song. What I especially liked about his approach was its originality: instead of translating the Swedish text, he imitated its sounds in English, creating something both faithful and new.

Memories is without doubt the most personal track of the EP. I had left this melody aside for years before reworking it into its final version. The main piano motif and its left-hand counterpoint have not changed since their original creation, and I simply developed everything else while staying true to that atmosphere. The repetitive rhythm allowed me to gradually explore all the different sides of the melody, ending with a final section that features the most complex string arrangement of the EP, providing a strong contrast with the minimal nature of the piece. It was very curious for me to realize that a melody which has been with me for so long could still inspire me to bring it back, even though it appeared so “early” in my artistic journey. Since our personalities tend to evolve constantly, it is always surprising to see that some things remain with us despite this.
Floating Light and Last Light form a complementary pair within the EP. They are the only two pieces written exclusively for string quartet, without piano. While Floating Light explores brighter harmonies and a sense of openness, Last Light closes the record with a darker and more introspective atmosphere, offering a contrasting perspective.
Finally, I wanted to mention the Intro, which stands out from the other pieces because of its more artificial creation. All the other tracks were fully performed and recorded by real musicians at Studios Saint Germain in Paris, but this one was composed using software and pre-recorded samples. In a way, it acts as an opening towards the next musical universe I want to explore. This will be more focused on the search for timbres and textures, which I will then bring to life by combining them with real musicians’ recordings, of course. This track therefore serves as a small window of inspiration for future projects.
